As of July 2021, 31 states (plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands) allowed voters to bespeak their partisan affiliations on voter registration forms and reported total registration numbers publicly. The remaining 19 states either did not ask voters to point partisan affiliation on their registration forms or did non publicly study those totals, according to analysis washed past Ballotpedia.

This article provides details near the number of registered voters by partisan affiliations in those states that allow voters to register by party and report those totals publicly. Historical information dating back to 2000 was provided to Ballotpedia past Richard Winger, the editor and publisher of Ballot Access News.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Equally of July 2021, 49.3 million registered voters identified themselves every bit Democrats. At 39.6%, Democrats represented the single largest share of registered voters in those states that allow voters to indicate partisan affiliation on their registration forms. A total of 36.4 million registered voters identified themselves every bit Republicans, representing 29.2% of registered voters in these states.
  • Approximately 38.8 million registered voters identified themselves as independents or members of third-parties. This amounted to 31.2% of registered voters in these states.
  • In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden (D) received a combined 53.5% of the vote to Donald Trump'south (R) 44.7% across these states. Both candidates received a larger percentage of votes than the per centum of their corresponding party's registered voters. Independent and 3rd-party voters made up 31.2% of all registered voters in these states, while independent and 3rd-party presidential candidates received 1.ix% of the vote.
  • In those states that prompt voters to signal partisan affiliation on registration forms, affiliation with a political political party may exist a condition of participation in that party's primaries. To learn more about primary participation criteria, click here.

    The map beneath shows the 31 states that displayed voter registration figures publicly equally of July 2021. In 22 states, no unmarried group of voters made upwardly a bulk of registrants: in 10 states, Democrats fabricated up a plurality of registered voters and Republicans fabricated up a plurality in four. Voters registered as independent or with a 3rd party fabricated upwards a plurality of registrants in 8 states. Democrats made upwards a bulk of registered voters in two states—Maryland and New York—and Republicans fabricated up a bulk in four—Idaho, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming. Contained or 3rd party registrants made up a majority in three states—Alaska, Arkansas, and Massachusetts.
